The finest lagoons of the West

From La Saline-les-Bains to l’Hermitage — the island’s largest lagoon — via Boucan Canot and Saint-Gilles, the West offers calm, clear waters, perfect for family swimming and snorkelling. Our lagoon-side homes give you direct access.

The west-coast lagoon runs for some twenty kilometres, from Saint-Gilles-les-Bains down to the south of La Saline. Protected by a coral reef, it offers shallow, calm water in contrast with the open ocean around the rest of the island.

Each stretch has its own character: L’Hermitage has the longest beach, lined with casuarinas and busy at weekends with Réunion families; La Saline is more peaceful; Trou d’Eau, further south, is the most discreet of the three.

It is also the best snorkelling ground reachable from the shore. Coral seabed lies a few metres from the sand, explored with mask and snorkel, taking care not to touch the reef.

Choosing your stretch of lagoon

From north to south, what sets each beach apart:

  • Saint-Gilles-les-Bainsthe northern end of the lagoon, beside the marina, restaurants and shops.
  • L’Hermitage-les-Bainsthe longest beach, shaded by casuarinas, lively at weekends.
  • La Saline-les-Bainsquieter and more village-like, with a fine outlook for the sunset.
  • Trou d’Eauthe southern end, the most discreet, valued for its calm.
